Controversial Bridal Advice part 1. I’m starting gently with this one today, Bridal alterations are not a nice to have or an add on. It’s essential and needs to be budgeted for. Dresses are made for 6ft people as they are easier to take up than to add length to. Bodies don’t always (ever!) fit our size charts perfectly and who wants to spend £1500 on a beautiful dress then walk down the isle with a baggy bust 🫣 or a dress that’s too long you’re tripping over it. Make sure you’re adding dress alterations into your bridal budget.

The very first wedding dress my mum made was her own! I grew up with the living room floor being the cutting table and the whirr of sewing machine being my lullaby. From a young age I dreamed of being just like her and making bridal dresses. For a long time, life took me in a different direction and that dream was quietly extinguished. Then, at the end of 2022 the opportunity to open a bridal boutique presented itself. Some days I need to pinch myself that I am doing a job I dreamed of as a little girl. I love helping brides feel as special on their wedding day as my mum did! This really is my dream job, and the best job in the world!

The dresses in our window feature elegant clean lines and intricate details! Masie has beautiful long cutout lace sleeves, while Havana shines with her fitted curves and off the shoulder elegance. Bridal dress budgets can be a minefield and so many brides don’t even know where to start!

How much do dresses cost? Are alterations necessary? What does customisations mean?

Let me break this down
1) how much do dresses cost? They cost as little or as much as you want them to, but how much you are willing to spend will dictate where you’re shopping. If you’re looking to spend under £500, on line or charity shops are the best place for you. £500-£1000 focus on ‘off the peg’ shops or chain bridal shops. Up to £2000, that’s me! This is where my dresses fit comfortably. We measure you up and order dresses specially for you!

2) What does customisations mean?
As the dress is being made specially for you, we can ask the factory to make some changes for example, don’t like a sleeve, we can change it to one you do like. Want a different fabric? No problem I’ll ask them to make it in a different fabric. Want to add a layer of glitter tulle? The factory will do that! It does cost extra, in most cases you’ll need to add 20% to your dress.

Finally 3) are alterations necessary?
Yes you’ll definitely want some alterations on your dress. All of our dresses are made for 6ft brides with a long torso. It’s easier to take a dress up or take the shoulders up than it is to add length. Whilst we order the dress to your size, dresses are not made to measure, so you may find some gaping in the bust, waist or hips. We can recommend amazing seamstresses that will be able to help make your dress look perfect on you 💕

Have I left it too late? Can I still buy a dress from a boutique?
The honest answer to these questions are, come and see me! The longer we have the more options we have. 12 months is ideal so we can talk about customisations, fit in relaxed fitting appointments and make sure you dress is perfect for your day. However, we know that sometimes overwhelm sets in and decisions aren’t made till the last minute or maybe you’re looking at a shot engagement for a number of reasons. For this reason we work with suppliers who can get dresses to us in as little as 1 week, we can often offer to sell our sample dresses and we work with seamstresses who can be very flexible. No matter the time you have till your wedding, come and see us and we can work with you!

How many people can I bring to my appointment?
This is the most asked question by brides! The truth is you can bring as many people as you like, it’s your appointment and totally up to you!
The truth also is, the more people you have the harder it can be to make a decision. The more voices and opinions you hear the harder it is to choose a dress, and for this reason, I recommend keeping it to 3-4 guests. However, if you need you mum, 2 best friends, mother in law, an aunt, your sister and grandma here, then bring them! This is your appointment and we will always welcome your tribe.

📣📣 We are now WsM Bridal 📣📣
Some of you will know this summer we have been busily working hard to open our new Prom Shop @wsmprom. We wanted the names of the shops to similar enough so that you would all know that they were the same business! The Prom Store was already taken, so WsM Prom and WsM Bridal were born. The names already reflect our instagram handles that we’ve been using for the past 2 years and I’m loving our new floral design! We are also the only Bridal and prom boutiques in Weston, so we feel this name suits us perfectly!
We are also making a couple of changes inside our boutique with a new viewing area, bigger shop floor and will be revamping our fitting room this month too! I can’t wait to show you the finished results!

You may notice that during the summer I have been slower to respond. I am still here, there are still appointments available throughout August. You may hear more noise than usual coming from the office or even see a little face pop up as they struggle to stay hidden! Like many people, during the summer I am juggling being a working mum to these gorgeous little ones (although they’re not so little anymore, this was 2 years ago!) Please bear with me ❤️
